Career Opportunities

TruNorth is a growing, full-service landscape and maintenance company. We are always accepting applications, so please submit your application even if a position is not currently listed as hiring!

Are you looking for a Green Industry career in Northern Michigan where you feel appreciated? Do you feel stuck in a rut at your current job with no clear path forward? You deserve more.

At TruNorth Landscaping, we care about more than just getting the work done. We respect our team members’ home lives by having a clear and consistent start time and no weekend work. We respect your professional life by offering opportunities for growth within the company and training and educational opportunities within the Green Industry as a whole.  We respect your time while at work by providing you with high-end equipment and up-to-date technology that make your day-to-day work easier. In order to grow and succeed as a company, our team members need to grow and succeed as well.

We believe in above-average benefits and pay

You are working hard each day of the week. We know you are dedicated to your work and believe you should be compensated well for it. Our starting pay is above average for our industry and for the area. Pay rates increase with any experience, certifications, or training you may have.  We offer bonuses, health insurance, 401K programs with matching, and paid time off.

We offer year-round work

The landscaping season in Northern Michigan typically runs from April-November, but that doesn’t mean you need to find another job in the off-season. We want your career at TruNorth to be just that, a career, not just a job. We provide snow services to many of our maintenance clients, which allows for you to work year-round if you choose. In addition to snow removal, our teams work at the shop preparing for the upcoming landscaping season, complete trainings, and more! Rather have the winter off? That’s OK too!

We don’t work weekends

Our offices are closed on weekends. We believe that our team needs that time to recharge with their family and friends. Your home life is important to you, and it is important to us. During the busy summer season, we start at 7:00 AM and our teams are typically leaving the shop at 7:15 AM. We use our time efficiently during the week, allowing for weekends off for everyone on the team. During our winter season, we are at the mercy of Mother Nature, so weekend work is sometimes needed if you decide to work year-round. The workload in the off-season shifts and adjusts with the snowfall.

FAQ about Employment at TruNorth:

Making a career change can be scary and uncomfortable, and we totally understand that. Check out below some of our most frequently asked questions and the things we think you would want to know about employment at TruNorth. Have more questions? Give us a call today, and we would love to chat.

Our pay rate typically ranges between $15-25/hr for landscape crew members. Pay increases with industry experience and/or credentials and also with leadership positions like foreman or manager.

We offer several different reward/award type programs each year. They change year to year depending on our goals and the employees. For example, we offer a referral bonus for referring someone else to come work with us as well, and we offer a photography bonus at the end of the season to the team member who submitted the most quality photos of jobsites.

We offer a wide variety of benefits for full-time employees. New employees are eligible for health insurance after 90 days of employment. We pay 40% of the employee’s premium. After one year, new employees are eligible to participate in our 401K program. We match up to 4%, depending on your contribution. Paid time off is offered according to years of service.

No! We have an excellent and experienced team that is ready to train you if you do not have experience. Many transition to the Green Industry because they are sick of sitting behind a desk all day indoors! We simply want good people on our team, and that doesn’t mean experience is necessary.

We have worked very hard to build up our snow removal program so that we do not have to lay any employees off during the winter season. Year-round employment is available at TruNorth if you want to work year-round.

During the summer season, our team works 5 days a week, Monday-Friday. Arrival time in the summer months is 7 AM, and typically employees work 8+ hours a day. We do not work weekends. During the summer season employees average between 40-55 hours a week. The winter season is much more dependent upon weather. We try to offer as many hours as possible to those in the winter.

Our typical day looks as follows:

7:00- Arrival and Morning Huddle; Tuesdays- Safety Meeting

7:15- Crew Departure

Teams arrive at jobsites for the day. Maintenance teams work on several different sites and use their iPads with ASPIRE software that details their schedule and work to be completed. Landscape teams typically only visit one site per day. Snow removal teams also visit multiple sites per day. All will be using iPads with ASPIRE software available. Before leaving the site for the day, they ensure it is safe for clients to navigate. Upon returning to the shop, teams unload coolers, trucks, and equipment. All trucks and machines are filled with fuel and cleaned.

We pride ourselves on having the right equipment to make your job easier. For example, we have a conveyor belt to help install mulch more quickly and efficiently. We purchase new equipment and trucks each year so you have what you need to get the job done well.

We do require that team members wear a uniform to remain professional for our clients. The uniform requirements consist of work boots, neutral colored work pants, TruNorth Logo shirt (there are many options), and either a TruNorth hat or a Green Industry Hat (like a hat you may win from one of our suppliers like Unilock). Our foremen wear blue polo shirts so they can be easily identified by our clients. Our in-office staff wears closed-toed shoes, pants, and blue logo TruNorth gear for a shirt (again, many options available).

We have tried to put as many systems in place so that our team feels supported. We have an on staff mechanic so that broken items can be fixed as quickly as possible. We have two experienced leaders that work directly with the landscaping installation teams. We have a Chief Operating Officer that works with and coordinates the maintenance division. Our sales and design team assists in many different ways from unloading plant deliveries and helping to organize the nursery to being available to answer questions about a current landscape installation. We have a large cooler that holds ice and several igloo coolers that are taken out by our teams each day into the field.  We also have integrated a new landscape management program call ASPIRE. It gives you all the information you need at your fingertips about a jobsite and also allows you to take notes and turn in your records and time electronically.

Our office is located in Leelanau County, but is a Traverse City address. It is easy to get to and a quick drive from town. We have a pole barn up front that stores a variety of equipment and materials along with a fueling station and a equipment washing station. Our main office building was built just a few years ago and has 5 offices, including a large design and estimating room, a kitchenette, bathroom, client waiting area, a supply room, and a conference room. Attached to our office is our shop which has an additional office space and bathroom, sink, washing machine and dryer, cooler that stores ice for the field, and two large garage stalls with overhead storage. Our property is several acres, so we also house our nursery and materials like mulch and stone on the property as well.

We specialize in full property maintenance and landscape installation. We work for both residential and commercial clients. Our goal with our maintenance division is to be a company that makes your entire property look great, so we rarely take on a client where we only mow the lawn. For example, we typically mow, fertilize, and do horticulture services. Our landscape division specializes in medium to large size projects that are usually hardscape focused. We install a ton of patios, retaining walls, walkways, firepits, and outdoor kitchens.

For those looking to be hired in a foreman position, we do require a Chauffeurs License. The ability to bend, kneel, and stand are required along with the ability to lift or move 50 pounds.

Our team has an annual summer and winter event. We have done things a little different each year and let the team decide what sounds like fun to do. In the past, we have done paintball, barbeques, catered Christmas parties, beach days, and more.

Our overall goal as a company is to promote from within any time that we can. We are a very quickly growing company, so there is always a need for people in leadership roles. If you have interest in the design or estimating side of the company, we are always open to you learning new things and trying out new positions. Our goal is for our current crew members to become foreman in a few years after training and working with an experienced foreman. We are continuing to add new leadership positions as our company grows rapidly.

We belong to a wide variety of groups and associations. Really any training that you are interested in and feel would provide value for yourself and the company we would love to sign you up for. We attend the National Association of Landscape Professionals annual conference each year and that features tons of learning opportunities and fun. Any classes or courses offered by the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association are excellent ones to attend as well. Sometimes these courses are offered in person and sometimes virtually. We want you to grow and learn!

We would love to support you in gaining some certifications while working at TruNorth. For some positions, certifications are required such as a CDL or a Certified Pesticide Applicator License. The MNLA and NALP both offer certification programs as well that we have the course materials for and would love for you to invest in.
