Project Story
When TruNorth Landscaping began this woodland retreat renovation in Traverse City, the property was empty except for the house and the driveway. The homeowners had plenty of beautiful woods, but they didn’t have any usable outdoor space to actually sit down, relax, or host family and friends.
The goal was to change that to utilizing every side of the house. TruNorth Landscaping built a wraparound layout with distinct gathering zones. Because the yard slopes, the team connected two separate patio platforms with a custom staircase made from ledgestone and heavy boulders. This layout gives the family a dedicated place to entertain on one level, or unwind under their pergola on another.
To tie everything together, flagstone steppers create a simple path that loops from the backyard patio to the front driveway. Finally, we surrounded the paths and home with structured garden beds and vibrant wildflowers, bringing natural color right up to the edge of the woods.

“Except for a flower bed in front of the house, when we moved here nearly two years ago we had no landscaping or hardscape. TruNorth was starting from a blank slate and transformed our outdoor space into an outdoor oasis. We are stunned every time we look at it. We were sad on the last day when we had to say goodbye to the team. They were a joy to work with and took great pride in their work. Kyle and Josh offered suggestions for design modifications that made a big difference in the final look and feel of the space. Everyone was wonderful to work with. We highly recommend TruNorth to anyone.”
