With last year’s stay at home order, many Michiganders flocked to their local garden centers to begin sprucing up their property for Spring. It is expected that this year homeowners across the nation will again be eager to get their summer gardens planted. Many in Northern Michigan love to plant their own annual flowers, even if the rest of their landscape is being taken care of by professionals, so what annuals are new and trending this year?
Annual Flower of the Year 2021
The national annual flower of the year chosen is the Supertunia Mini Vista Pink Star Petunia. We love this selection for homeowners as it is really easy to take care of, and they bloom all season long.
If pink is not your style, these adorable mini-Petunias come in a variety of colors including purple, red, and white. While they can take less sun, they thrive in an area that receives 6+ hours of direct sunlight a day and require very little upkeep.
There is no need to remove spent blooms from this type of Petunia. They look great in hanging baskets, upright containers, or garden beds!
Annual Planting Recipes 2021
Proven winners also provides three annual ‘recipes’ for your container garden or even a hanging basket! One arrangement does best in shade, one in part sun/part shade, and the final in full sun. Be sure to consider these guidelines as plants will not thrive if they are not given the amount of sun or shade they require. Check out these beautiful arrangements below!

Selecting a Landscaping Company to Help with Annual Flowers
If choosing and planting your own annual flowers is not your thing, you are not alone! Many of our clients like to have our team plant their container gardens as a part of their maintenance program. Some clients like to have us select all the plants that we feel would look best in their space and others have certain plants they love and ask us to include.
We know that especially for our commercial clients, property managers do not have the time to select, transport, plant, and eventually dispose of annual flowers. Or as a busy homeowner with a second home in the Grand Traverse or Leelanau County area, you want to spend your time at your cottage relaxing, not running around town to find flowers and spending the weekend working to plant them.
